About this project

About this project

What is Shore Lore?

Shore Lore is the nautical-inspired apparel and conservation project of artist and illustrator Bryan Collins. The idea for a nautical based apparel brand came from the desire to bring awareness to our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them in a fun and unique way. Our designs are centered around mermaids, the Kraken, Atlantis, sea monsters, and other fascinating lore of the sea both fact and fiction. From giant squid attacking ships in a bottle to gorgeous mermaids with fish for hair, the execution of our imagery will put shirts on your back that are sure to start conversation wherever you wear them.

How We're Different:

What separates Shore Lore from other clothing companies is obviously the artwork, but it's also the traditional way in which the designs are made. Each shirt starts out as a raw pencil sketch. The art is then painstakingly inked with a variety of pen sizes to give the work a vintage illustration feel. The final art is scanned and screened onto shirts, tank tops, hoodies, hats, and more. No digital rendering is used to create the designs, making Shore Lore apparel truly wearable art. What's more is that we give a portion of our time and proceeds to cleaning and protecting Florida's water and aquatic life. We don't just donate funds, we donate ourselves to beach and salt river clean ups and marine rehabilitation efforts.

Conservation:

Bryan uses his own personal resources for conservation of the waterways in and around Saint Augustine, Florida where he lives and plays. Kayaking trips are made to pull trash out of salt creeks and marshes, removing garbage from precarious locations others won't try to reach. Monetary donations are made to protect sea turtle nesting grounds and marine rehabilitation efforts. Shore Lore funds will be used to ramp up these efforts and help keep Florida's beaches and salt rivers clean. We have begun posting pictures of our clean-ups and conservation activities on our Instagram, so follow us @ShoreLore http://www.instagram.com/shorelore

About the Artist:

Bryan Collins has been designing tees with his hand drawn art for more than 20 years and his limited editions always end up selling out. A formally trained tattoo artist, Bryan has an eye for contrast and juxtaposition which translate well to wearable works. His art is surreal, whimsical, and detailed. His work has been featured by Juxtapoz, Game Informer Magazine, Flash Tattoo Magazine, and more. Theodus Crane (The Walking Dead) wore one of Bryan's sold out Danger Dive shirts on his IMDB page. He has exhibited art with Fran Drescher's Cancer Schmancer organization and Mary Schmidt Amons' Labels For Love. In 2001 Bryan traveled with a group to Haiti to help build a school. He donates a portion of his art sales to non-profit organizations such as homeless shelters, young single mothers support homes, clean water initiatives, and more.

Bryan has owned and operated an independent magazine where he sold his shirts designs, was in a band where he sold shirts, owned a record label where he designed shirts, owned a tattoo studio where he sold his shirts, and now works as an exhibiting gallery artist where he sells his shirts. Designing and selling apparel is something Shore Lore's founder can do.

About Our Partners:

Bryan has been working with the same mom-and-pop screen printer, Fretto Prints, for three years and will continue this relationship moving forward. Being able to touch shirt samples and look at variations of inks and finishes in person will allow for the highest quality renditions of each piece. There is no replacement for having a personal relationship with the people involved in this team effort. This also allows Shore Lore to pay it forward and support other small businesses.

Distribution:

Distribution of Shore Lore will be done through our online BigCartel shop but mostly in-person at surfing competitions, fishing tournaments, seafood festivals, arts markets, concerts, and other related events. We want this line of apparel in local surf shops as well. The more Shore Lore we can move, the more people that will be reminded of the amazing ocean which covers most of our planet, and more conservation efforts can take place.

Funding Plans:

Once funded, the proceeds will be used to make the three new shirt designs available here as rewards. We will purchase marketing material such as outdoor banners for festivals and shows, display items such as torso mannequins and clothing racks, and begin expanding our apparel line to hats and hoodies. Some funds will be used to pay for exhibitor fees at upcoming events so we can get our apparel and message in front of new faces. We will acquire and display literature about the importance of saltwater conservation of what people can do to help. We will acquire a donation bin that will allow patrons to give directly to marine rehabilitation and research centers such as Whitney Labs at Marineland who have recently built a sea turtle hospital and are creating colonization structures to sustain oyster populations.

We have already acquire an enclosed trailer for hauling our gear to events and with any extra funds over the goal amount we would LOVE to get the trailer wrapped with our Shore Lore name and images of our product line. The more exposure we get, the better our chances to succeed, and that means the more we can do for the coastal environment. Let's clean up the sea and wear cool clothes while doing it!

Risks & Challenges

Shore Lore's founder, Bryan Collins, has been a self-employed artist for eight years. With his wife Rachel he has also owned and operated a retail sunglasses store and opened a tattoo studio which he sold to become a 2D artist. Most of the potential risks with expanding an apparel line have been met in his past and overcome. Bryan's network of fans, family, and friends is the greatest safety net a creator can have. He is already selling his shirt designs with great success. The biggest challenge is getting enough support to push this movement into the future and secure new avenues of distribution. Without your support, nothing can happen. This is why we need your pledge!
